Buried Treasure

I have a lot of paper. Stationary to write on, letters kept, papers for work, books to read. And today, in those piles I’m sorting, filing, and putting away to deal with later, I found a treasure. A hand written letter from my sister to me on my birthday that included a wonderful poem I had not read before. This poem lifts the spirit and reminds me why I want to work for change, and how I feel we are at the cusp of making the transformative change we need for a better, more just, sustainable, and empathetic world. Note that Hafiz uses the term “us,” the collective, the whole; then the use of “you” as perhaps a more direct appeal to the individual. We’re it. We have to make the change .

You’re It, by Hafiz
God
Disguised
As a myriad of things and
Playing a game
of fog
Has kissed us and said
“You’re it –
I mean, you’re really IT!”
Now
It does not matter
What you believe or feel
For something wonderful
Major-league wonderful
Is someday going
To
Happen
